The AG3 rifle entered Norwegian Army (Hæren) service in 1967, with 250,000 made at Köngsberg Vaabenfabrik by the time production ceased in 1974.

The AG3 was phased out of army service following adoption of the HK416 rifle in 2007, but is still used by Home Guard (Heimevernet) units.
